Best Class for Tieflings – Baldur’s Gate 3

Last Updated:

Tieflings, the beings derived from infernal or abyssal bloodlines, whether they were turned into tieflings by the powers of an archdemon, archdevil or victim to some divine curse, or perhaps they have some infernal heritage that has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Tieflings are a demonic-looking humanoid, with large horns that take any of a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelle’s, and some spiral upward like an antelopes’ horns. They have thick tails, four to five feet long, which lash or coil around their legs when they get upset or nervous. Their teeth are pointed, and their eyes are solid colors—black, red, white, silver, or gold—with no visible sclera or pupil. Their skin tones cover the full range of human coloration, but also include various shades of red. Their hair, cascading down from behind their horns, is usually dark, from black or brown to dark red, blue, or purple.

Tieflings are among a favourite race for a lot of D&D players, not only because of their aesthetic but also the in-game abilities and features they’re abundant in.

Tieflings in Baldur’s Gate 3

Tieflings are a narratively-dense race, considering the story of BG3 takes place shortly after the events of Descent into Avernus, a TTRPG module that centers laregely round Elturel, a city predominantely run by tieflings. In fact, shortly after starting BG3, the player can encounter a number of refugees, Tieflings who survived the Descent and are currently making their way to Baldur’s Gate for sanctuary.

Welcome to Baldur’s Gate, a city of ambition and corruption situated at the crossroads of the Sword Coast. You’ve just started your adventuring career, but already find yourself embroiled in a plot that sprawls from the shadows of Baldur’s Gate to the front lines of the planes-spanning Blood War! Do you have what it takes to turn infernal war machines and nefarious contracts against the archdevil Zariel and her diabolical hordes? And can you ever hope to find your way home safely when pitted against the infinite evils of the Nine Hells?

Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus

So if you choose to play a tiefling, you’ll be pleased to see a welcoming group of your kin, but very early on do we also get to see the discrimination tieflings endure in the Forgotten Realms. And we can only imagine how worse that’ll be when they get to Baldur’s Gate itself. This being said, tieflings often have a lot of narratively-driven content, thanks to their infernal bloodline. The world will acknowledge you, and it might even be harder for you, but this only means it’ll be a more immersive story for you.

Best Class for Tieflings in BG3

Warlock BG3

With the various mechanics and ability buffs in mind, what is the best class for you to play? Well, Tieflings are a a Charisma focused race which immeidately grants them favour with Sorcerers and Warlocks, but they could also be a powerful Wizard with their buffs to Intelligence. So which do you want to pick?

Sorcerers carry a magical birthright conferred upon them by an exotic bloodline, some otherworldly influence, or exposure to unknown cosmic forces. No one chooses sorcery; the power chooses the sorcerer.

Sorcerers’ magic is innate, and works off your Charisma. So far, in Early Access, Baldur’s Gate has access to Dragonic Bloodline and Wild Magic Sorcery. Both of which you can learn more about in our Baldur’s Gate 3 Sorcerer Guide.

Warlocks are seekers of the knowledge that lies hidden in the fabric of the multiverse. Through pacts made with mysterious beings of supernatural power, warlocks unlock magical effects both subtle and spectacular.

Warlocks are gifted their magic as part of an otherworldy pact with a stronger being, it works off their Charisma. So far, in Early Access, Baldur’s Gate has access to The Archfey, the Fiend and the Old One. All of which you can learn more about in our Baldur’s Gate 3 Warlock Guide.

Wizards are supreme magic-users, defined and united as a class by the spells they cast. Drawing on the subtle weave of magic that permeates the cosmos, wizards cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, brute-force mind control, and much more.

Wizards learn their magic as it works off their Intelligence. So far, in EA, Baldur’s Gate 3 has access to Abjuration and Evocation. Both of which you can learn more about in our Baldur’s Gate 3 Wizard Guide.

Final Thoughts

So in conclusion? Tieflings are a brilliant race to play BG3 in, and when it comes to which class is ideal? Well you should never feel restricted to the class you want to play by the race you’ve chosen. Unless you want to metagame, play the class you feel you’d enjoy the most but if you do want to match up the ideal stats to the ideal class, then we’d recommend Sorcerers, Warlocks or Wizards for your tiefling build!
